Anywhere near you Seven?

http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/europe/12/07/greece.riots/index.html

Personally the policeman who shot the kid, if he was indeed throwing a firebomb, should get a Christmas bonus and not a suspension. :police: :bang:

Gotta say this... agree or disagree with what they are protesting, Greek people are certainly passionate about, well, about everything! Found that out at a greek friend's wedding this fall. Quite an event.

Seven - hope you are well and unaffected by these civil disturbances.

Nada Shamu it seems the specific kid, was just in the wrong place at the wrong time and the idiot police officer shot towards the crowd cause someone insulted his manhood.

In any case Greece has a big fat problem.
Right now the center of Athens is no fire. LITERALY. More than 12 buildings have been set on fire, 2 across the PARLIAMENT!
500-1000 ppl across the country unpunished have been  destroying properties for 3 days now.
Everyone believes those rioters are leaded by someone. We always had a few diots causing riots now and then declaring somekind of anarchy-whatever but miracusly were very absent during the Olympic Games when everything should be in order..

This has never happened before, at least after the NAZI occupation.
There are rumours the priminister (a big FAT IDIOT) will declare martial law (!!!).

I am too sad and annoyed from the course my country is following I can only hope we reached bottom and well since we can't go any  lower we will build something good from the ashes of our country.

as an epilogue... the Athens Xmas Tree on Fire (located in the main square of Athens with the parliament in the background)  :'(

p.s. I live in the greater centre of Athens. But Athens is a big big city so for the time being I am not in any danger.

I've never been clever, because need it never.

I am sure you know we are all glad to hear you are not in any danger. And we don't want to see pictures of you in the news smashing storefronts and burning cars :o

As for the protesters they are providing the perfect excuse for the Prime Minister to declare martial law. Depending how things go the protesters might be shooting themselves in the foot with violent protests. It gives the government a ready made excuse for further oppression and control of the population.

Protests can be a very delicate balancing act. It's a tough line to walk trying to make your point without hurting the cause of legitimate demonstrators.

If the protests continue to be violent the focus will not be on the boy who was murdered but shift to who the government brands as radicals.

As conservative as I am I do believe peaceful, organized protests. You can accomplish much more than with indiscriminate violence that hurts innocent bystanders. Perhaps even more than the intended target.

I fear Greece has already reached the point where innocents are being hurt more than the government. If not, they are very close.

The 500 rioters or so, are 15-16years old brainless kids that are leaded by "nobody knows who" for years now without really a demand or a cause, expect break everything in their path fighting the "system". So as you understand there is not any ideological motive behind their actions. Just a rioting mob, acting mostly because nobody stops them.

Why to respect the laws when they are not enforced and you know you will stay unpunished for your actions?

I am afraid the greek society is deeply corrupted and police is no exception, is both corrupted and incapable of taking any serious action.
Police is NOT trained, not protecting and not serving. Their toughness is to be bullies against kids like the 15years old that got shot from a bully cop (a father of two kids for God's shake...)

So for a 15years old kid that grows up in a society where he knows that laws are rarely respected is very very easy to participate in this kind of riots. After all you can't really expect from a teenager to think maturelly you expect from the grown-ups to show him how.

Of course we must NOTICE that the democracy in modern Greece is only 30 years old after 50 years or so of a deeply divided society after world wars, civil war  and juntas.
This also explains the condition of the Police, for 50 years Police's main work was focused on a witch hunt against half of the population for their political beliefs. Trying to make the police leave her sinful  past behind we reached the other end and "achieved" to neuter it.

In a way it is very interesting to see how GReece will go on, cause the economical crissis (partly caused by the world crissis but mainly by the greek corruption) doest leave us much space.  Maybe we will finally start act like grown-ups, especially us...the grown-ups!

I've never been clever, because need it never.

Somewhat unfortunate that the riots do not focus on the death of the boy but only use the death as a spark to start a greater fire that apparently has been smoldering in Greece for sometime now.

With political parties, labor unions and various other elements involved this has gone far beyond a protest over one boys death.

With Labor Unions and opposing political groups involved their agenda is generally self-serving and only being used to advance their own agenda. They have very little concern that a boy was killed by police. That issue is simply a tool for them to advance their own cause.

The more I read the more I understand the unrest, people have a good reason to be displeased with the government. Looks like a long difficult road to resolve the root problems.

lmao Drago and Beckett! please, I wanna be rescued ;)

Well Shamu, its overall a complicated problem and has to do with the whole course Greece has taken the last decades. Which might be or will be your problem as well (I mean for USA).

For a start, Greece is almost producing nothing anymore.
We used to have great agriculture exports, textile exports and even industry. Now? Farming is dying, textile has died or moved to China / Bulgary/ wherever there is cheap labour.
Our main financial income comes from services, like tourism or shipping (greek shipowners have some of the biggest fleets in the world).
Plus Greeks in a decade became big time consumers living on debts and credit cards that can't really afford to pay.

But can a society survive when it produces NOTHING?
With all this cheap labour/slavery around the 3rd world I guess USA faces he same problem.

The so called middle class is shrinking in favour of poverty.

This is something that will cause big time troubles, already causing in USA where ppl cant pay the debts anymore.

Its not a greek problem only, something must be done for more fair wealth distribution. Otherwise troubles will keep coming our way.
You cant live in a world where 75% lives on poverty or under poverty and pretend nothing is going on or blaming the poor for their laziness or even worse their misfortune.

Seven even took a week off from work to join the protests.

I think she is back to work next week.

Just watch, next week the protests will die ;D
