The book upon which the movey was based was written by James Bradley, the son of one of the second flag raisers on Iwo Jima.

The second flag raising was a basically a photo shoot and became one of the most published pictures ever.

The first flag raised was deemed too small so a larger flag was sent ashore and rasied for better visability. This is the one that became famous.

James Bradley also wrote another book "Flyboys" which, IMHO, is a better book than Flags of our Fathers.

Flyboys is about the teatment of Pilots captured by the Japanese on the island of Chi Chi Jima, south of Iwo Jima.

And BTW, this Island is where former President Bush was shot down but eventually rescued by a US Submarine.

Very good reading for those inclined to read instead of seeing the movie.

Both books are well researched and interesting.

For reading I give a big edge to Flyboys.
