Laptops???
« on: June 21, 2007, 12:20:46 AM »
My Toshiba P-25 is in dire straights.

Internal CD/DVD drive working sporadically. Now I am going to a blue screen telling me about some fatal error and having to power off. Sometimes it starts back up somtimes not.....when it fails to boot it sits at a black sceen with only the power button lit, hard drive apparently not running.

Crashing sporadically.

The blue screen message asks about recently added hardware or programs and says to boot in safe mode to remove them. Well, nothing has been added......so much for that message.

So......I have been browsing laptops. My choice so far is the Dell Inspirion E1705.
http://www.dell.com/html/global/topics/gaming/en/us/us/dhs/systems-notebook.html

This is at the very limit of my pocketbook......any comments or suggestions?

SEVEN!!!!!!!!! DO NOT TELL ME A MAC ;D

Also any comments on Vista vs XP?

Please do not even try to think about Vista if you want to stay out of problem...

That s about the only advice I can give you.

ok my advises:

  • AT LEAST 1GB of RAM if you can afford do it 2GB
  • NO VISTA if you still wanna play MOH.
  • The hard disk whatever capacity it has, it'sbetter to have 7200RPM speed. This is very crucial, it makes your system faster.
  • 256MB VGA card. ANd a dedicated card, not something that is on the motherboard (intergaded card).
  • if you have a choice and the money for a more power processor go for it.
  • Also check the weight of your laptop. You have to carry it so maybe you prefer a smaller screen but something lighter in weight?

I like the DELL one, but only if I could buy without the VISTA. Maybe you should ask them if they sell with XP only.

I searched in newegg.com with some of my criteria: here are some of the results after a quick search (all with XP instead of Vista):

Fujitsu LifeBook N6420

TOSHIBA Qosmio G35-AV600

ASUS A8 Series A8JM-H019H-XP NoteBook

ASUS A8 Series A8JS-4S024P NoteBook

HP Compaq nc Series nc8430

Okay, how about the following to which I should be able to add a Gig of Ram aftermarket?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834147350

Finding ones with XP really limits choices.

What's the deal with Vista and MOH?

Go with the Dell, and install both XP and Vista.  I have XP on my Dell and it works just fine.  I have XP and Vista on my home pc.

Vista runs great with no problems with any games, just have to make sure everything is update, drivers, etc...

Then again I also have Vista 64 and not the 32bit version.

I bought a Toshiba M55 and have been very happy with it for about a year now.

Also, check out www.notebookreview.com before buying anything.  Seem to have knowledgeable people on there.

To check out the M55, oh yeah it runs MoH like a champ!

Okay, I have been doing my home work and have checked the links provided. And browsed many laptops.

Right now I am leaning to the Asus G2S:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220185

I am still undecided on the Vista issue. Just what impact does it have if any? DE and some others have said it fine, some say it's a problem......what is the problem?

Anyone have anything beyond hearsay? Have latest updates resolved some previous issues?

I believe Ttjoum said in a post I have not found about running use nhancer 2.2.2. I also saw this in a forum.....just what the heck is it and what does it do? Apparently the Vista issue impacted only on Spearhead.

having vista and xp installed in a machine is not a bad idea, however I dunno if Shamu  has the time or the skills (love ya whale!) to do it.

Shamu you could ask Dell if they could install XP professional instead of Vista (I guess with some cost).

The asus one looks good too.

Spoke to Dell and you cannot get XP on the ones I looked at.

I can get XP on some Latitude models which are business type machines.

For now I have a headache and am going to forget about it.
