Actually DE you should look at this as a positive. If you are paying taxes you made money.......so don't complain

If you don't want to pay taxes just be a bum and don't earn any money. It's Catch 22.
As far as your investing philosophy goes you are actually very close to Peter Lynch's investment philosophy. Lynch is best known for his time as manager of Fidelity's Magellan Fund, one of the largest Funds in the US. He is also considered an investing wizard, much like Warren Buffet.
Magellan Fund, during Lynch's time as manager, consistently beat the industry averages. If I am not mistaken many of his decisions were simply based on his personal opinion of a product or service. I also believe one example was Bic pens. He saw them for sale, used one, liked the price of the pen and bought the stock. The rest is history.
